Only Watch 2021: The Breguet Type XX Chronograph

House of Breguet presents the Breguet Type XX Only Watch 2021.

Committed to the cause, Montres Breguet President Marc A. Hayek confirmed his long-standing participation at Only Watch 2021.

Only Watch Charity Auction

Enthralling the likes of philanthropists and collectors, Only Watch is a biennial charity event involving wondrous and truly rare items from various brands. 99% of proceeds goes to the Monegasque Association against Muscular dystrophy (AMM), dedicating resources to the scientific and medical research towards Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD).

Standing with the cause, aesthete and mavens of Haute Horlogerie has made generous contributions since Only Watch initiated in 2005.

The Reimagining Of A Breguet Chronograph

Having acquired early interest in aviation watches, the House of Breguet embarked on the manufacture of pilot timepieces for the American Air Force in 1922. Through the years, those contrivances gradually transformed to chronographs with counters and tachometers, giving bearers the option to don on their wrists or affix to the aircraft’s dashboard. Breguet persisted in the provision of sophisticated chronographs, and in 1954, the creation of Type XX ultimately established the greatest chapter in history for Breguet pilot watches.

Type XX de 1954

Following the Type 20 military chronograph that was auctioned off in Only Watch 2019, Breguet pays tribute to the civilian editions of the 1950s and 1960s Type XX chronograph for the 2021 event. Meticulous reproduction of the visual and mechanical codes of the emblematic Breguet timepiece unfolds a creation almost indistinguishable from its forerunners.

Breguet Type XX Only Watch 2021

A great number of features resembles the first-generation Type XX as the 2021 model celebrates the historical coherence in accolade.

Encased in a 38.3 mm steel case sits the numbered and signed Calibre Valjoux 235 13-line, a mechanical manually-wound, column-wheel movement completed with a flyback chronograph. The bronze-coloured dial is salient as it embodies architecture that accents a small seconds subdial at nine o’clock, an enlarged 30-minute totalizer at three o’clock, and remodeled teardrop-shaped hands filled with luminous markers, contrasting its prior.

The Breguet Type XX Only Watch 2021 chronograph offers excellent readability in all conditions with its hands colloquially referred to as “syringes”, along with largely-applied Arabic numerals, all filled with Super-LumiNova® substance.

Another paid homage, the bidirectional steel bezel has been given the same attention to precision on this pilot piece, which comes fitted with a 12-hour scale, along with a luminous triangular marker that is strongly inspired by the first generation of civilian Type XX pieces. The calfskin leather strap with a steel pin buckle, presented in an airplane wing-shaped case puts the finishing touches of the heavily-influenced 2021 Type XX.

Uniquely made for Only Watch 2021, the screwed steel caseback of this pilot watch explicitly hallmarks the occasion with text engraving that states, “Only Watch 2021 Pièce Unique”.

Only Watch kicks off with a world tour in Monaco on 22nd September 2021. The 9th edition of Only Watch is supported by 55 contributing brands and various partners. The 2021 auction is due to take place on 6th November at the Four Seasons Hôtel des Bergues, Geneva.

More information on the event and its 2021 assemblage can be found on the Only Watch platform.
