OMEGA’s Seamaster Summer Blue Collection Is A Nod To Iconic Designs

Cortina Watch Omega Seamaster Summer Blue Diver 300m Feature

OMEGA commemorates Seamaster’s 75th anniversary with the Summer Blue collection, paying homage to exemplary Seamaster designs past and present.

2023 marks the 75th anniversary of the Seamaster, a quintessential dive watch in watchmaking history. Although the first-ever Seamaster debuted in 1948, as OMEGA pivoted to making contemporary watches suitable for civilians post-World War II, the watchmaker’s ocean-going endeavours date back much further. Unveiled in 1932, the Marine paved the way with its ingenious design and water resistance. It solidified OMEGA’s reputation as a maker of durable, innovative and excellent watches, laying down the sound foundation from which the Seamaster prospered.

Over the years, the Seamaster family has grown to encompass modern icons that transcended the ocean into pop culture and record books. The evolution epitomises OMEGA’s savoir-faire in watchmaking, adventurous and innovative spirit, as well as its continuous advocacy of ocean conservation. The Seamaster Diver 300M 007 Edition, Seamaster Planet Ocean 6000m Ultra Deep and Seamaster Aqua Terra 150m Co-Axial Master Chronometer GMT Worldtimer 43mm are some of the shining examples.

To celebrate the milestone, OMEGA unveils not one but 11 references, paying homage to various memorable Seamaster iterations, in the colour most evocative of its unbroken ties with the ocean. Furthermore, every watch is attired with a commemorative caseback. The Seamaster logo, depicting a trident-bearing Poseidon and two seahorses: OMEGA’s 1956 original and the brand’s current design. The sculpted representation of Neptune’s Seahorse on each side of the city’s symbolic gondolas personifies the collection’s seafaring heritage, refined style and robustness.

From the flawlessly crafted case to the advanced mechanical movement, the Summer Blue collection showcases the precision permeating at every level of OMEGA’s watchmaking approach.

Comprising three timepieces in stainless steel, the special release captures the essence of the Aqua Terra, from the first generation to the current line-up, albeit with a twist. For that, OMEGA produces a new dial in sun-brushed Summer Blue, varnished with a gradient finish.

Initially debuted in 2002, the original Aqua Terra recalled the minimalism of the legendary OMEGA Seamaster 300 from 1957 with clean lines and a discreet dial. However, the aesthetics of the Aqua Terra family have evolved over the years as references to sailboats and yachts seeped into their designs, inspiring the emblematic indexes and patterned dials seen today.

Beautifully symmetrical, the trio features unique light-blue Super-LumiNova-filled rhodium-plated hands and indexes to complement the equally enchanting dial. The 38mm edition is arrayed with sailboat indexes upon an understated dial, paired with a polished and brushed bracelet. It is equipped with OMEGA’s Co-Axial Master Chronometer 8800. Two corresponding editions in 41mm feature a contemporary teak deck-inspired dial and OMEGA’s Co-Axial Master Chronometer 8900, while offering a choice between a matching bracelet and blue rubber strap. All three watches are water resistant to 150 metres.

The Aqua Terra Worldtimer in Summer Blue is extraordinarily rich in detail and depth.

The Aqua Terra Worldtimer in Summer Blue is extraordinarily rich in detail and depth.

The 43mm Aqua Terra Worldtimer in stainless steel is an illustration of Earth’s most endearing nickname – the Blue Planet – thanks to the prevalent shades of blue. Exemplifying that it is indeed a vanguard in watchmaking, OMEGA refreshed the Seamaster Aqua Terra Worldtimer in 2019, two years after its inauguration, by embracing laser technology to produce a vivid recreation of the Earth with an extraordinary level of detail, texture and colour.

Imbued with Summer Blue, the special edition highlights precision-driven watchmaking, whereby a grade 5 titanium plate is laser-ablated to realise the blue ocean and relief of the continents seen from the North Pole. Encircled with silvery printed destinations, the hesalite glass reveals a 24-hour reading; light blue for daytime and dark blue for night. Water resistant to 150 metres, the exceptional worldtimer is powered by OMEGA’s Co-Axial Master Chronometer 8938 and available with a matching bracelet or blue rubber strap.

The Seamaster 300 holds a special place in OMEGA’s archives. Unveiled in 1957 as part of OMEGA’s “professional” trilogy, alongside the Speedmaster and Railmaster, the original Seamaster 300 has inspired many generations of dive watches, thanks to its ingenious design.

The latest edition boasts a design that bridges vintage and contemporary. Housed in 41mm stainless steel case and enriched with a varnished dial in Summer Blue, the watch exhibits rhodium-plated hands, recessed hour markers and open numerals replete with a striking light blue Super-LumiNova. Enhanced with OMEGA’s Co-Axial Master Chronometer calibre 8912, certified by the Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology (METAS), the watch is water resistant to 300 metres.

The Seamaster Diver 300M is as robustly made as it is beautifully crafted.

Crafted with adventures in mind, the Diver 300M offers the intrepid explorer a complete package in style and durability. First released in 1993, the watch instantly caught on with a distinctive diving scale, skeleton hands, bold raised indexes and helium escape valve. The newest 42 mm Seamaster Diver 300M in stainless steel takes it one step further, incorporating a blue ceramic bezel with new Summer Blue enamel (Grand Feu) diving scale, in addition to a Summer Blue wave-pattern ceramic dial. The rhodium-plated skeleton hands and raised indexes are filled with captivating light-blue Super-LumiNova for a harmonious look. Fitted with OMEGA’s Co-Axial Master Chronometer 8800, the latest addition to the Seamaster family comes with a matching bracelet or blue rubber strap.

The special-edition Seamaster Planet Ocean 600M harnesses the splendid Summer Blue colour.

Famously recognisable for its audacious orange accent, the Planet Ocean sings a different tune in the Summer Blue remix. The special edition marks a departure from the original design presented in 2005 where the orange bezel took centre stage. Perfectly at home in the ocean, the 39.5mm stainless steel model impresses with 600 metres of water resistance. In lieu of orange, a blue ceramic bezel with light-blue diving scale encircles the Summer Blue ceramic dial, which is PVD treated and varnished with a gradient finish. The consummate dive watch is complete with blued hands and indexes endowed with an eye-catching light-blue Super-LumiNova, powered by OMEGA’s Co-Axial Master Chronometer 8800.

Seamaster Ploprof Co-Axial Master Chronometer 1200m – 4000ft

The unique design of the legendary Seamaster Ploprof is elevated with Summer Blue.

The unique design of the legendary Seamaster Ploprof is elevated with Summer Blue.

Unmistakable, unique and distinctive, the Ploprof has had no shortage of superlatives since hitting the market in 1971. Purposefully designed to withstand the ocean’s crushing pressures, the Seamaster Professional 600, popularly known as the “Ploprof” (from PLOngeur PROfessionnel – French for “professional diver”), remains one of the most robust and innovative dive watches ever made. Its credentials were attested by French oceanographer Jacques Cousteau and the underwater research company COMEX, who called upon the watch during their deep-sea experiments.

The ground-breaking design, born of the necessity of fixing the crystal to the uncompromising monobloc case in order to eliminate the need for a helium escape valve, has carried on to 2023. Crafted in O-MEGASTEEL with a sun-brushed Summer Blue dial, the singular dive watch is equipped with a bezel ring made of sapphire crystal, to mirror the chemically reinforced monolithic crystal used in those early versions. This transparent crystal is varnished blue on the back and reveals a light-blue diving scale.

The characteristic monobloc case is bolstered with a screwed-in crown and security pusher at 2 o’clock, which sports a ring in blue ceramic exclusive to this commemorative edition. OMEGA’s Co-Axial Master Chronometer 8912 ensures this decidedly ‘70s-looking watch, complete with a perforated blue rubber strap, takes on the ocean like a duck to water.

Seamaster Ultra Deep Co-Axial Master Chronometer 6000m – 20000ft

The record-breaking Seamaster Ultra Deep is also a trend setter thanks to Summer Blue.

The record-breaking Seamaster Ultra Deep is also a trend setter thanks to Summer Blue.

Following the historic world-record dive in 2019 to the deepest reaches of the ocean, the Mariana Trench, OMEGA harnessed the valuable insights it acquired from the expedition and distilled them into one of the most capable dive watches ever produced for retail. Water resistant to 6,000 metres and debuted in 2022, the Ultra Deep is a collection of game-changers rigorously tested in oceanic conditions during their development, with the final products meeting the ISO 6425:2018 standard set for saturation dive watches, as certified by the Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology (METAS).

Joining the illustrious Ultra Deep stable, the Summer Blue edition unveils a unique textured dial motif. The faithful representation of the Challenger Deep, mapped by the Five Deeps team using approximately one million sonar points, features a lacquered finish to showcase a blend of craftsmanship and precision, intermixed with the natural beauty of the ocean floor enabled by modern technology.

Acknowledging the record-breaking feat, OMEGA has quietly embedded the sketch “OMEGA WAS HERE” into the dial, pointing towards the world-record dive of 10,935 metres and showing the Western, Central and Eastern Pools, laid bare only when shone a UV light. The watch is powered by OMEGA’s Co-Axial Master Chronometer 8912, while the 45.5mm case and bracelet are manufactured from O-MEGASTEEL.
