Watches & Wonders 2021: Vacheron Constantin’s ‘Classic With A Twist’ Novelties

Vacheron Constantin’s ‘Classic With A Twist’ Novelties Offer Exquisite Expressions Of Their Long withstanding Values

The theme for Vacheron Constantin’s 2021 novelties is classic, with a twist. For the first watch we are going to talk about, it is quite literally the case. For the rest of the recent launches during the Watches and Wonders, however, the theme represents the eccentric nature of the manufacture where they constantly look to do things outside of what is considered the norm for watchmaking. Being the world’s oldest manufacture in continuous production, more than 265 years since their founding in 1755, the trick is to ensure their heritage remains intact while still creating pieces that can capture the attention of modern audiences. We think it’s safe to say, this year’s novelties hit that nail right on the head.

Historiques American 1921

This watch has long since been a mainstay of the Vacheron Constantin collection popping up in various instances throughout the past decades. This year however is especially important for the Historiques American 1921 as it is the 100th anniversary since the very first reference was made. And for such an important milestone, the watches launched at Watches & Wonders 2021 was inspired by an American 1921 model that belonged to American writer and clergyman Samuel Parkes-Cadman—renowned for his fight for racial equality and the struggle against anti-Semitism.

The American 1921 with its unique case and orientation has long been a sought after Vacheron Constantin piece.

The asymmetrical orientation of the dial was initially created for driving enthusiasts who could see the time at a glance without having to take their hands off the steering wheel. This year, the tradition continues with three special pieces. Two of which are created with decadent 18K white gold cases in a smaller 36.5mm size and a more proportionate 40mm size as well. Those that are looking for something even more special, will be happy to find that there is also a 40mm reference clad in a 950 platinum case.

Cropped2

Just like the original, this limited edition Historiques American 1921 Collection Excellence Platine launched during Watches and Wonders was made to be read without having to take your hands off the wheel.

This reference will be limited to 100 individually pieces worldwide. All watches will come with Caliber 4400 AS which was developed and crafted by Vacheron Constantin.

Overseas Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin

The Vacheron Constantin Overseas Ultra-Thin perpetual calendar is already a special watch in its own right but this year, for the very first time both the skeleton version and one with a blue lacquered dial will be offered in white gold. It is astounding how the brand manages to fit the abundance of components found in a perpetual calendar calibre into the 4.05mm thickness of the 1120 QP movement, which then translates to an 8.1mm watch with the case.

The technical feat of squeezing something so complicated into such a slim form is astounding.

To showcase the technical prowess that can be found in the manufacture, these Overseas cases all offer display casebacks so one can marvel at the beauty of the movements. For a more technical and dynamic look, the watchmakers carve out even more space in this already compact movement, revealing its intricacies from the front side as well.

Sleek and thin, these Vacheron Constantin Overseas Perpetual Calendars are the epitome of elegance.

What makes them even more mind-blowing is the fact that each of these movements is stamped with the Hallmark of Geneva meaning they are not only precise but also the movement is finished to perfection.
