In 1957, it was significant and historical moment on Omega’s timeline, this is the year they introduced new watch series to the world and became the start of greatness not only for Omega but for all mankind as well.
The first Omega Speedmaster model, the reference CK 2915 was launched in 1957 and 12 years later, Speedmaster Professional, the new generation from the series was worn by Apollo 11 astronauts before they landed on the Moon for the first time in the history of mankind. Since then, the name became synonymous with the success of space exploration, which led many people to call it the Moonwatch.
Of course, the success of Moon exploration was remembered and no one forgets the beginning of the long journey of the Speedmaster either. In 2013, Omega introduced the special edition watch that is a new creation to meet the modern era and still retaining the classic of the original Speedmaster CK2915 and the result is well-received Speedmaster ’57, until ten years later another change happened again.
The new Speedmaster ’57 has been released with changes that suitable the era of change. The case size is smaller and thinner, adjust new design to make it more reasonable and show the roots of the classic that was created 65 years ago. Importantly, the movement that is the heart of the watch has changed as well.
Eight variants have been added to the 2022 Speedmaster ’57 collection with a wider range of dial colors, the glossy PVD dials in burgundy, blue and green. However, the most interesting is sandwich black dial model that has a complex production and creation process. Two sets of dials are sandwiched together to form the grooves of the hour markers filled with vintage Super-LumiNova that create noticeable look and added more depth to the dial dimension.
All four colors dial will come with a choice of leather or steel straps to match the customer’s preferences. Also there are details that pay respect to the Speedmaster’s space exploration histories. The steel strap inspired by a special strap that dedicated to Apollo 11 watch released in 2019, equipped with Omega’s patented strap adjustment system that can be adjusted finely to two positions without tools and can extend the length of the watch strap by 2.3 mm.
Another important change is the case dimension, in the previous model the was 41.5 mm are reduced to 40.5 mm on the new model, this new size allows the new Speedmaster ’57 to be similar size as the CK2915 (1957) the model that was chosen as a development guideline and decrease case thickness to 12.99 mm thinner than the latest Moonwatch model 0.59 mm.
The change in case thickness is a result of the new manual-winding movement OMEGA Co-Axial Master Chronometer Caliber 9906 that replace the previous automatic movement, the new movement are Certified Master Chronometer approved by METAS, 12-hour counter and 60-hour power reserve with the attractive of the parts that you can touch and admired through the transparent caseback, both the rotor and the polished rhodium plated bridge with Arabesque Geneva Waves motifs.
In terms of design, the 2022 Speedmaster ’57 retains the identity and design of the original Speedmaster CK2915, with a stainless steel bezel and tachymeter scale engraved on the bezel and the symbol DON (Dot Over Ninety) where the dot is placed on top of 90 on the tachymeter scale, Board Arrow-shaped hour hand polished rhodium plated with diamond finish with fluorescent Super-LumiNova while other hands are gracefully design and has a diamond polished rhodium finish as well.
