The New Tudor Royal May Just Be the Best Entry Watch into the Tudor Club

The Tudor Royal offers quality at an accessible price

In the year 1926, Hans Wilsdorf registered the Tudor brand with one purpose in mind – producing watches at the best possible quality, while remaining a highly attractive price. These days, Tudor has moved into the luxury watch space, with their Black Bay collection commanding quite a demand. However, the newly launched Tudor Royal seems to take a step towards the ethos of the brand; providing excellent quality timepieces, at an accessible price.

Inspirations from vintage Tudor watches

For this new watch collection, Tudor decided to revive the Royal name which was first used in the 1950s. Though fans of the brand will tell you that this is the new Tudor collection, the Royal is also a spitting image of the Tudor Oyster Prince Date-Day, Ref. M94510, from the 1980s. The most recognisable design element of the Royal is the curved day aperture at the 12 o’clock position for the 41mm cases, it also brings back the elegant notched bezel. Additionally, the watch features an integrated bracelet, a simple but robust construction that integrates well into the case.

Naming conventions aside, the new Tudor Royal takes the philosophy of the brand and cranks it up a notch. It is a fantastic luxury steel sports watch with an integrated bracelet, and yet, it has one of the most affordable price tags within the brand. One of the ways Tudor manages to keep its affordable price is through the use of the reliable Sellita and ETA movements.

At this point, purists may hope for the use of in-house movements, but keep in mind that the ETA 2824 is an extremely dependable workhorse movement. These movements, placed in Tudor watches, are treated as extensions of the Tudor brand; and as such, is adjusted to Chronometer precision standards as well as affording the same five-year warranty it offers the watches with in-house movements.

The new Tudor Royal is available in various sizes and configurations

If one is looking to purchase the Tudor Royal, they will be spoilt for choices as this particular watch comes in four different sizes and have nine possible dial configurations. Available in black, silver, champagne-colour or blue, the sunray motif on the dials of the Royal radiate from the centre, creating elegant lighting effects and reflections.

For feminine models, there is also a version available in diamond-set mother-of-pearl. As a final touch of chic, Tudor has added Roman numeral applique hour markers to its Tudor Royal watches. All the dials offer these appliques, which can be replaced by eight diamond hour markers.

The case sizes for the Tudor Royal consists of 41mm, 38mm, 34mm and 28mm. Do keep in mind the Date-Day complication is only available in 41mm case size.
