Global Timekeeping: Exploring BOVET’s Mastery of the GMT Complication - Cortina Watch

Thanks to BOVET’s mastery of the GMT complication and exceptional interpretations of the GMT and world time watches, keeping track of multiple time zones is a matter of precision and art.

GMT watches and travel are like peanut butter and jam sandwiches; they are destined to go hand in hand. At their core, watches were invented so we could tell time whenever, wherever, and so the GMT complication seems a natural fit for watches in a world where travel takes people places and brings loved ones closer. Perhaps none has made the GMT complication quite like the work of art the way BOVET has accomplished.

BOVET's unique interpretations of the GMT Complication

At its most fundamental, the GMT complication is represented by dual-time watches that display two time zones on a single dial, using the combination of the standard hour and minute hands, as well as an additional GMT hand that can be set typically in an hourly increment. Thanks to this extra hand, the GMT watch can inform the wearer of the local time and the home time.

The GMT function enables travellers to stay abreast of the time at home and abroad. It is especially useful for business travellers who might want to make an overseas phone call and know that they are calling at the right time. At BOVET, the GMT complication goes beyond the ordinary with hemispheric displays, three-dimensional indicators and a range of spectacular decorations.

Renowned for its artistic flair and technical innovation, one could say BOVET was born with the GMT complication. When it was established officially on May 1, 1822, the Maison’s founding brothers were already scattered across Switzerland, the UK and China. At the time, Alphonse and Frederic Bovet were living in London, with Gustave managing the ateliers in Fleurier, while Edouard was introducing their extraordinary creations to audiences as far as Canton. Edouard was a champion of the transparent caseback, enabling BOVET to showcase the brand’s craftsmanship with great panache.

The historical context of which BOVET was founded in three time zones has empowered the Maison to become a prolific maker of GMT and worldtimer watches today, disgorging unique expressions such as the Dimier Récital 27, which offers the wearer no fewer than three time zones; the Dimier Récital 28 Prowess 1, which remains the first and only mechanical timepiece to overcome the challenges posed by the Daylight Savings Time; and the Fleurier Orbis Mundi, which completely reimagines the worldtimer.

Guided by heritage, innovation and passion, BOVET under the current stewardship of the visionary owner Pascal Raffy sits at the acme of watchmaking. Producing approximately 800 watches annually, BOVET continues to uphold an exceptional level of chronometry and artistry central to its identity since its founding over two centuries ago.

The Art of Displaying Multiple Time Zones

A musical score when fallen into the hands of master conductors, each would sound different. This is no different with the GMT complication, with the GMT watch displaying the second time zone in a variety of manners.

These days, the GMT complication is largely grouped into caller GMT or true GMT, based on whether the GMT hand is used primarily to display the local time or home time. The caller GMT hand is deemed to be more useful at keeping track of an overseas time, while the true GMT hand is better suited to keeping track of the home time due to their respective mechanisms. Furthermore, the GMT hand is used in conjunction with the bi-rotational 24-hour GMT bezel coated in two distinctive colours to differentiate between night and day.

With the true GMT complication, the hour hand for the local time can be set independently by an hourly increment, forward or backwards, with the GMT hand remaining stationary. This makes it easier for the user to set the local time while ensuring the home time indicated by the GMT hand remains untampered. On the other hand, the caller GMT watch features a GMT hand that can be adjusted forward independently without moving the regular hour and minute hands.

The GMT complication is also interpreted in rare instances with a GMT subdial featuring an extra set of hour and minute hands, in addition to the regular hour and minute hands. And to display multiple time zones at once, the worldtimer is arrayed with a selection of cities and countries around the world synonymous with a specific time zone. This rendition allows some creativity with brands offering names of the cities most relevant to users of a particular geography. For BOVET, however, the GMT complication branches into a whole new level.

Transforming a complex complication into a watch equally stunning as it is user-friendly, BOVET’s ingenuity sets it apart from the rest. The Fleurier Orbis Mundi, as a notable example, melds innovation, craftsmanship and exclusivity, with practicality and precision. Unveiled during the Maison’s 200th anniversary, the worldtimer whilst a thing of exceptional beauty is remarkably easy to use. Indicating all 24 time zones in a singular dial composed of pure aventurine glass offering a distinctive perspective as though one sits at the top of the world, the watch can be operated simply via the crown to both set the time and the 24 international locations.

The 42mm Fluerier case is inspired by BOVET’s archival pocket watches. Shaped into a classic horseshoe, the top lug gives ample protection to the cabochon-embellished crown that matches its blue alligator strap and the signature guilloché dial. Every part of the Orbis Mundi movement is finished by hand. Vital regulating organs such as the in-house hairspring and escapement are made exhibitive with the guilloché dial partially removed. The small seconds unusually isolated into 20-second intervals told by a three-armed seconds hand lend a touch of creativity, while the finely finished manufacture movement showcased on the back of the watch is a nod to the brand’s own pioneering advocacy of the transparent caseback. As a result of the movement’s outstanding efficiency, the power reserve is good for seven days on a full wind. A longevity to complement the worldtimer’s splendour.

Technical Ingenuity and Artistic Craftsmanship

As a co-founder of BOVET, Edouard cast the foundation of the Maison. His first watches were generously trimmed with gemstones, mother-of-pearl, miniature paintings in Grand Feu enamel and rich engravings. In the 20th century when industrialisation gradually took over watchmaking, leading to the severe decline of enamelling and miniature painting, BOVET’s belief in artistic crafts didn’t waver. The Maison first encountered fame in the Far East with the unrivalled quality of its miniature paintings, winning the admiration of many. Even the Emperor of China became a BOVET collector. Some of the pieces are exhibited in the Forbidden City.

Today, BOVET is a proponent of polished lacquer, a new technique inspired by its past creations and developed by an artisan working exclusively for BOVET to highlight the lusciousness of Chinese lacquer. Requiring repeated firings in lower heat, it is seen as a versatile and successful alternative to enamelling. Fleurisanne, one of the most demanding and elaborate engraving techniques, is also practiced here.

Despite the time-consuming process, the virtuosic watch brand persists with honouring artistic craftsmanship by persevering with hand finishing for all the components of its high-complication manufacture movements. Over the years, BOVET has added extra strings to its bow by absorbing BOVET Manufacture de Cadrans, DIMIER 1738 Manufacture de Haute Horlogerie and the Château de Môtiers. It enables the Maison to unite all skilled artisans and watchmakers necessary to produce Haute Horlogerie movements from start to finish under one banner. This integrated expertise remains elusive to most watch brands but is pivotal to the Maison’s commitment in elevating quality and pursuing technical advancement while preserving the artistic side of watchmaking.

The triple-time-zone Dimier Récital 27 is a culmination of this sustained effort. It is a complex GMT watch arrayed with three time zones across the primary dial and two subdials. The latter can be set independently to match any city on the two world time rings, complete with day/night indicators. The gorgeous moonphase indicator only needs to be corrected once every 122 years. In order to house all the exceptional parts, the watch features the ergonomic “writing slope” case design, which is thicker at the top and slimmer at the bottom. To evoke realism, the moonphase is engraved with a lucid lunar motif. Beneath the guilloché dial and partial openworked architecture lies a dynamic manufacture movement with seven days of power reserve. Filled with purpose and poise, the Récital 27 is an ode to the world.

BOVET's GMT Watches: A Fusion of Form and Function

BOVET balances form with function. Magnificent yet purposeful GMT watches highlight innovative interpretations of the GMT or world time complication. Another example, such as the award-winning Dimier Récital 26 Brainstorm Chapter Two combines a universal time display with indexable second-time zone, a double face flying tourbillon, a three-dimensional hemispheric moonphase indicator with a trademarked writing slope case made of sapphire.

The breathtaking watch is an exercise of artistry, innovation and bravery. It is a GMT watch unlike any other. Its symphony of flawless finishing, avant-garde complications and futuristic materials brings upon the sense the watch represents the state-of-the-art. It is an evolution of the Récital 26 Brainstorm Chapter One, which debuted a host of innovations.

But even as BOVET unveils a groundbreaking timepiece, it is already working towards the next statement watch. The Récital 28 Prowess 1, which was awarded the Mechanical Exception Prize at the 2024 Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG), took five years of intense development. A quantum leap in mechanical watchmaking terms, the Récital 28 Prowess 1 overcomes the technical issues created by Daylight Savings Time (DST), when selected cities across the world observe daylight savings at certain times of the year. These seasonal changes vary from year to year and only 70 countries observe DST. For example, DST in New York starts on the second Sunday of March and ends on the first Sunday of November, while Bangkok observes none.

The Récital 28 Prowess 1 revolutionises the world time complication by prioritising rollers over the conventional world time display. The 24 city rollers are printed on four sides, while the time period roller is emblazoned with the four different periods: UTC, American Summertime (AST), Europe and America Summertime (EAS), and European Wintertime (EWT).

When the user activates the sapphire cabochon on the crown, all 25 rollers turn 90 degrees at the same time and all the cities align with the correct time zone. This formula ensures the timepiece is always accurate no matter what time of the year it is, as well as correct during DST. The unprecedented solution is coupled with an expanded flying tourbillon, a perpetual calendar with roller-based indications, an impressive 10-day power reserve from a single barrel, meticulous hand-finishing, hand-engraved bridges and an alluring aventurine dial to form a high-complication world timer that befits its historic achievement.

The Récital 28 Prowess 1 is a showcase of BOVET’s technical mastery. Building upon the patented double-sided flying tourbillon as a base, the tourbillon’s escapement has been moved off-centre to accommodate the cage – the lightest BOVET ever used – carrying the balance wheel and the in-house balance spring on the other side.

Moreover, the roller-based perpetual calendar utilises the patented Function Isolator to safeguard the complex movement, with a special dampening system to gently bring the rollers to a halt. Watching the rollers change in an instance is an event worth waiting for, especially when turning to a new year. All 744 components are finished by hand. In particular, the bevelling of the major structures of the movement is produced via the angle rentrant method, which currently can only be realised by hand.

BOVET's Global Timekeeping Legacy
