Franck Muller Cintrée Curvex’s Timeless Sensuality

It is not only the curves, but also a bold re-imagination that flourishes in all the right places, that make the Franck Muller Cintrée Curvex a modern horological phenomenon.

Can shapes ever be perfected? Is it possible, for instance, for one to trace an exacting square or circle, and then for someone else to say he can do better? It would be ludicrous to assume that one can draw any better than a perfect circle. Unless, of course, you were Franck Muller, who has been known to see things just that bit more differently.

The celebrated watchmaker who, with entrepreneur Vartan Sirmakes, founded his eponymous watchmaking house in the 1990s and boldly declared the company to be a “Master of Complications”, may have built a legacy of audaciously complex and theatrically technical timepieces. But back when the brand had just started, Franck Muller also boldly challenged norms in the field of watch design.

The Cintrée Curvex, released at the time of the brand’s founding, introduced Franck Muller to the world by demanding one’s attention. A distinct outlier in a field dominated by round and square watches, it stood out with its tonneau-shaped profile. But not just that—after all, the tonneau shape wasn’t new, surfacing on wristwatches back in 1906. Franck Muller reworked its proportions and perspectives, arriving at a silhouette that looked and felt unlike anything else on the wrist. It was a shape that refused to behave—at once classical, sensuous, and radically dimensional.

While tonneau is French for “barrel”, Cintrée Curvex translates to “arched in a curve”. For Franck Muller, three-dimensionality and sensuality were key. A curvaceous shape that expresses smoothness and flow, the Cintrée Curvex’s case boasts a distinctive curvilinear form; it takes the classic tonneau and fills it with pronounced, ergonomic curves.

Its three-axis construction—vertical, horizontal, and a domed crystal and dial—was central to its identity. Voluminous yet refined, the watch is visibly curved from every angle. This sculptural approach challenged both design expectations and manufacturing limitations, laying the groundwork for the Cintrée Curvex’s enduring appeal.

Needless to say, it is a laborious undertaking to craft a Cintrée Curvex. But the results are worth it. Not only does the watch add presence to the wrist, but its arched caseback also ensures a snug and comfortable fit. Ultimately, the design serves as an inspiration for Franck Muller to complement its unique silhouette with equally striking technical and aesthetic features.

The impact of the Cintrée Curvex extends far beyond its core collection, even spawning entirely new families in the Franck Muller universe. While the Cintrée Curvex family offers a rich gamut of creations—artisanal skeleton watches, sophisticated chronographs, and highly complex perpetual calendars and tourbillons—its distinctive shape has also been adopted by newer designs.

There is, for instance, the Vanguard collection. Introduced in 2013, the watches took the Cintrée Curvex’s signature profile and intensified it, giving the form greater volume and a sporty disposition. Today, the Vanguard line includes a wide variety of models for different styles, and occasions, from the whimsical #FR2NCK MULLER Vanguard Beach Limited Edition to the sleek Asia-Pacific exclusive with pavé de losanges guilloché-pattern dial.

Another noteworthy offspring is the Curvex CX, introduced in 2022. A dressier take on the Cintrée Curvex, it updates the original with a slimmer case and bezel—and a curved sapphire crystal that extends all the way to the bracelet—giving the dial more visual space. The result is a contemporary interpretation refined with a newly designed guilloché pattern.

Beyond watches, the Cintrée Curvex has even inspired specially crafted gemstones. Diamonds, emeralds, blue sapphires, and rubies featuring the ‘Curvex Cut’—a 73-facet design that follows the contour of a petal—appear on the new Vanguard Curvex Cut Flower watches, extending the silhouette’s influence into the realm of jewellery craftsmanship.

Having arrived fully formed as a horological sensation when it first debuted, the Cintrée Curvex remains one of Franck Muller’s—and contemporary watchmaking’s—most recognisable, and influential, icons more than 30 years on.
