When Patek Philippe debuted the Calatrava Pilot Travel Time model Ref. 5524G-001 in 2015, it was an unexpected but welcomed timepiece by collectors. Housed in a white gold case with applied blackened gold Arabic numerals coated with luminescent paint, it was the first Patek Philippe wristwatch to have an aviation-inspired design language. Based on its siderometers from the early 20th century, the Ref. 5524G-001 expanded the range of sporty, rugged timepieces offered by the watchmaker, while elevating the pilot or field-themed watch with a white gold case. The elegant tool watch collection features complications historically linked to aviation and others relevant to the lifestyle of the jetset.

The watch also debuted a new Travel Time module – the C FUS – that was equipped on the Caliber 324. This allows for a second time zone to be displayed on the main dial along with the local time, with day and night indication for both local and home time. An analogue date counter indicates the local date at six o’clock, and two pushers for quick hour adjustment on both time zones, when the crown is in one of two positions.
When Patek Philippe held its 2017 Grand Exhibition in New York, it offered collectors a unique limited-edition reference – the Ref. 5522A-001 Calatrava Pilot Limited Edition – as a time-only model equipped with the Caliber 324 S and housed in stainless steel. Unlike other special editions developed for its Grand Exhibitions, the 600-piece limited edition reference has not made an appearance in its catalogue, at least till now.

The following year saw another unexpected addition to the Calatrava Pilot series – a smaller-sized Calatrava Pilot Travel Time Ref. 7234R-001 in rose gold and sized at just 37.5mm in diameter. The watch offered a more refined take on the field or pilot’s watch by introducing a sunburst finish brown dial with a black gradient rim that is characteristic of Patek Philippe today. The smaller case size was also atypical of pilot’s watch models, but even though the Ref. 7234R-001 was quite a bit smaller than the Ref. 5524G-001, it provided the same Travel Time functions as its predecessor. For clients with slimmer wrists or who simply preferred a smaller-sized watch, the Ref. 7234R-001 was an excellent alternative to the original.

A mid-sized Ref. 7234G-001 with a matte blue dial, hewing closer to the Ref. 5524G-001’s aesthetic, emerged two years later. The previous year, Patek Philippe had introduced the Ref. 7234G in at the Grand Exhibition in Singapore, but with a light blue sunburst finish dial with oxidised white gold hour and minute hands as well as hour markers, coated with luminous material. It had a synthetic Cordura strap in a matching blue. The Ref. 7234G-001 presented in the catalogue had a dark blue dial and hands coloured in a lighter blue for easy reading, paired with a dark blue calf leather strap. However, last year, the two models were discontinued.

Anyone who is familiar with Patek Philippe will be aware of their skill in developing chiming complications. In 2019, the watchmaker unveiled the Ref. 5520P-001 Calatrava Pilot Alarm Travel Time, a development that brings together the utility-driven Travel Time complication with a practical chiming function. The watch added an alarm function to the Travel Time with a digital display for the alarm at 12 o’clock, with the option to switch it off, following the local time. The alarm can be set in 15-minute intervals, and to the next quarter, activating when the local time matches with the preset alarm. The 35-second long alarm uses a single gong and hammer to produce the alert, with a governor to regulate the pace of striking at a rather large volume. As a result, the Ref. 5520’s alarm chimes sound just like that of Patek Philippe’s minute repeaters, and is inspected similarly.

To develop this watch, four innovations were patented on the alarm mechanism alone, and a new movement created for the integrated movement. The Caliber AL 30-660 has a full-sized rotor and power reserve of up to 52 hours, and the watch is equipped with four screw-down crowns and pushers to manage all of its functions. It is also a waterproof watch, a rare example of a chiming timepiece that has water resistance and demonstrating that utility and innovation can co-exist without compromising on the qualities of a tool watch.

The Ref. 5520P-001 has been discontinued as of 2025, but it has a handsome successor in the Ref. 5520RG-001 which uses a mix of white and rose gold in the case. The bicolour case concept using two gold materials first appeared in 2010 on a Nautilus model as Ref. 5712GR-001 and has since been used on several Grand Complication models (the primary case material is represented first in the reference’s suffix). With Ref. 5520RG-001, rose gold is the primary material. The sunburst grey dial and charcoal grey hands and appliques bridges the warmth of rose gold and coolness of white gold, softening the contrast between the two materials and presenting a neutral, unisex overall look that appears less sombre than its platinum predecessor.

Patek Philippe has offered the Travel Time complication together with the chronograph since 2014, debuting the combination on the Ref. 5990 Nautilus Travel Time Chronograph. This was the only configuration offered until 2023 when the Calatrava Pilot added a new model with the same complications. The flyback chronograph was a function that was crucial to the world’s first pilots as it enabled them to chart their flight path and location. With the ability to reset while the chronograph gear train was still coupled with the going train, pilots could read the elapsed time and restart timing as they changed their direction of travel. This also meant they could accurately gauge when and where they needed to land in order to refuel.

The Caliber CH 28-520 is an in-house manufacture movement with column wheel control for the chronograph operations and vertically coupling of the chronograph and timekeeping going trains. This offers minimal impact to the amplitude of the balance and frictionless coupling, both of which are factors driving accurate time-telling. As the dial is already packed with information, <a href=”https://www.cortinawatch.com/th/en/patek-philippe/”>Patek Philippe</a> has dropped the running seconds hand from the dial; instead, if this is needed, the wearer can instead keep the chronograph running non-stop and use the chronograph seconds hand as a functional substitute. A full 60-minute totaliser for the elapsed minutes is presented at the lower half of the dial while the upper displays the date. In between the two are apertures that indicate day and night time for local and home time zones.

One important element across all of the Calatrava Pilot models is visibility in the dark, and this is emphasised in the 2025 launch of the Ref. 5524G-010 Calatrava Pilot Travel Time in white gold with ivory-coloured lacquered dial. The charcoal grey white gold hands and oversized hour markers are carefully coated with strong luminescent material that contrast against the outline of the appliques and hands for even greater legibility. The use of stencil-style fonts are meant to ensure that each digit is clearly distinguished with no room for error. Against the lighter ivory-colour lacquered dial, the luminous elements stand out even more in the dark.

In daytime, the Ref. 5524G-010 stands out among its siblings with a military- or safari-inspired colour palette. With a khaki green composite strap with fabric pattern and off-white dial, it emphasises ruggedness and the explorer’s spirit. Over the decade, this is a design evolution that is taking off in the Calatrava Pilot line. In the new year, this will hopefully bring new references to the collection.
