Beyond the Norm: Watches with Unique and Novel Functions - Cortina Watch Malaysia

The allure of luxury watches is defined by an array of factors. From aesthetics, to craftsmanship, to desirability, watchmakers strive to create the perfect watch to entice the most discerning of collectors. They are locked in a constant pursuit of technical excellence and absolute precision.

Why do Watches with Unique and Novel Functions Exist?

While fundamentally watches are designed to tell time, luxury watches transcend timekeeping – they exist in the realms of art and daring. This motivation drives watchmakers to step up their game, not only in technical innovation but also artistic expression and creative interpretation.

Differentiation helps watches stand out and ultimately create a universe of distinctive watches, each possessing sophisticated complications and mechanisms, appealing to the varied personal preferences. Novel features are born and unique watches are created along the way.

Beyond Basic Timekeeping, What Makes a Watch Unique?

A myriad of reasons contribute to the uniqueness of a watch. This can be a distinctive form or shape, a departure from the conventional, an innovative material or a never-before-seen feature. In many cases, distinctive watches feature a mix of the above. They can also be inspired by history and sources outside of watchmaking, adding a deeper layer of intrigue and story telling. In Haute Horlogerie, watches come from collective artisanal efforts, resulting in highly limited production numbers where demand outstrips supply.

Well-established examples include the BOVET Virtuoso featuring the patented Amadéo® convertible case, transforming the watch into a reversible wristwatch, a table clock or a pocket watch. Franck Muller takes a philosophical approach towards timekeeping with the proprietary Crazy Hours, highlighting an hour hand that cleverly leaps from one hour to the next in contrast to the traditional sweeping motion.

A fiercely independent watchmaker, H. Moser & Cie. epitomises the spirit of independence in all areas of its operation. Every H. Moser & Cie. watch is handmade and features an in-house mechanical movement. The Streamliner stands out with a combination of high watchmaking innovation and retro-futuristic design.

Parmigiani Fleurier produces the TONDA PF cultural perpetual calendar watches that track the Gregorian, Hijri and Chinese calendars, elevating the perpetual calendar complication to unprecedented heights.

These are but a few examples of innovative and novel ideas materialising in practical features, making the watches housing these mechanisms unique and audacious.

One thing for certain is that iconic and unique watches are instantly defined and recognised by their looks, characteristics and complications. The coveted nature influences the perception and reputation of a watch, influencing its collectability to the degree of enhancing its value in the years to come.

Avant-garde Redefined: The Tri-axial Tourbillon Elevated

The tri-axial tourbillon, a complication pioneered by Franck Muller, is reimagined by the Maison, this time featuring an openworked architecture designed to dazzle. The Vanguard Aero Revolution 3 Skeleton is a daring expression combining technical mastery, avant-garde design and an in-house movement in a striking tonneau-shaped case maximising visibility while balancing the structural integrity.

With the movement and the case developed in tandem, their construction demanded uncompromising precision and exceptional craftsmanship, from both the machines and artisans, to bring to life Franck Muller’s signature contours and high watchmaking vision.

With light invited into the centre of the case from all four sides, the new MVT FM 2031-VS movement, developed over two years and assembled in-house from 280 components, soars with a revolutionary brightness and transparency.

The see-through caseback features a unique convex dome to accommodate the extraordinary movement. Mounted upon the caseback, this movement required a complete rethinking of the architecture and composition, to create stability while maximising the visual depth.

The spotlight falls on the tri-axial tourbillon. Rotating on three different axes, each of the three concentric cages completes a revolution in various durations: the inner cage in 60 seconds, the intermediate cage in eight minutes, and the outer cage every hour. Together they work to neutralise the gravitational effects on timekeeping, acting as guarantors to the watch’s chronometric precision.

Available in rose gold, blackened titanium and stainless steel, each reference is limited to eight pieces.

Masters in Disguise: A Chronograph On Demand

Masters in Disguise: A Chronograph On Demand

Celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2026, the acclaimed independent brand Parmigiani Fleurier has rewritten the rulebook of Swiss watchmaking time and time again with its ingenious interpretations of traditional complications and ground-breaking innovations.

The TONDA PF Chronographe Mystérieux is the first of its kind, showcasing a slimlined exposition of the chronograph where the function reveals itself when it is called upon.

The chronograph is among the cornerstone complications in watchmaking. It can be reinterpreted in distinctive ways, such as flyback and split-seconds, with each execution gaining in complexity. This versatility enables unique and novel chronographs to be crafted.

On the surface, the TONDA PF Chronographe Mystérieux disguises itself like a traditional three-handed watch. But under its deceptively minimalist appearance lies great complexity. The invisible chronograph unfurls when the monopusher at the 7.30 position is activated, instantaneously unveiling all five hands working in sync.

The chronograph hands emerge to begin counting. The second press halts the chronograph instantly, while the third returns the hands to their initial positions, realigning themselves with the main hands.

Such unique execution requires a capable movement, one engineered specifically to bring this vision to life. On the TONDA PF Chronographe Mystérieux, elegance and innovation are seen, touched and felt.

From Footwear to Wristwear: Sneaker-Inspired Haute Horlogerie

A watchmaking iconoclast, H. Moser & Cie. has turned horology on its head on more than one occasion with provocative aesthetics, transformative interpretations and innovative complications.

The latest watch inspired by the iconic Reebok Pump sneakers from the ‘80 goes beyond collaborative design, it reinvents the winding mechanism used in replenishing the power reserve of a movement. Available in black and white, each version limited to 250 pieces, the Streamliner Pump brings the fun to innovation.

The original Reebok Pump sneakers redefined footwear by creating a snug fit on a bold idea. By pressing the signature orange pump button, the mechanism built into the shoe begins to fill with air, allowing the shoe to inflate internally and wrap around the foot.

Channelling this ingenious concept, H. Moser & Cie. reinvents the traditional way of delivering energy to a mechanical movement. Instead of winding the crown to tighten the mainspring and increase its tension in the barrel – customary in hand-wound movements – the Streamliner Pump is “recharged” when the anodised aluminium pusher is pressed.

Each press transmits energy to the mainspring barrel and delivers over an hour of power reserve. Refuelling is indicated on the power reserve indicator, in matching colour to the Pump pusher. The manufacture calibre HMC 103 features a 74-hour power reserve.

Experimental, playful and tactile, this watch offers an interactive, rewarding feature in the spirit of the brand renowned for technical ingenuity. It embodies the belief “true luxury doesn’t take itself too seriously”.
