Carving out time in the busy work schedule to restore the mind and body to peak condition can be a challenge. Nevertheless, it’s a practice that experts recommend in order to allow the mind to find a well-balanced baseline, and to develop resilience in managing future challenges. This is why travel timepieces are one of the most useful complications today and a must-have in any watch collection. The dual-time complication was first introduced a century ago, although Patek Philippe presented its first dual time Calatrava model only in 1961, with a movement by Louis Cottier.

The inventor of the world time complication, which was commercialised by Patek Philippe, created the Caliber 12-400 HS (for ‘Heures Sautantes’) for the Genevan watchmaker. Patek Philippe’s dual time complication featured a separately adjustable second jumping hour hand on the dial that followed a 12-hour cycle, instead of the 24-hour convention. Two pushers on the left of the watch case adjusted the time zone forward or backwards. This style started in the second series of the Ref. 2597, using differently coloured hour hands to show the local and home hours.

The Travel Time complication spans Patek Philippe’s range of watch collections, from glamorous jewellery-clad references to grand complications. There’s a Travel Time for every journey and traveller; consider these models for your next trip.

For the Tightly Scheduled

If you are someone who likes to keep a tight calendar, or want to make the most of every trip, whether it is for business or leisure, the Ref. 5520 Alarm Travel Time will keep you right on schedule. The watch was first released in 2019 as a platinum model that combined two practical complications – a dual time zone and alarm – into one valuable travel tool. Furthermore, it was Patek Philippe’s first water-resistant chiming timepiece, since it did not require an activating slider to power the alarm. The three pushers at 2, 8, and 10 o’clock turn off the alarm and adjusts local time forwards or backwards. The crown at 4 o’clock, winds and sets the alarm and timekeeping functions. The splitting of these operations is meant to minimise accidental damage by wrongly adjusting two functions together.

If there is an important appointment to keep for the next work day or on the holiday, or if sleep hygiene is strictly maintained, the Ref. 5520RG-001 which was released in 2024, is an ideal wrist companion. The alarm function is adjusted to 15-minute increments and can even be set to strike up to one minute before the scheduled alarm. It’s a loud and melodious rapid chime, with warm tones that are enhanced by the rose gold case. The pushers are white and rose gold, which is Patek Philippe’s version of the two-toned watch. Like all Travel Time watches, there are day and night indications for the local and home time, and this watch, for the alarm as well.

The alarm is sounded with a single gong and hammer, with the hammer rapidly striking over a period of around 40 seconds. The system is regulated using a governor that’s fixed to the gong, next to the balance. (Credit: Patek Philippe)

With its large stencil font hour indexes that are filled with Super-LumiNova, and sword-style hands that are similarly designed, the Ref. 5520RG-001 has a strong field- or pilot’s watch aesthetic. The brushed and sunburst finish dial with a bronzed colour adds to that vintage, safari feel. It definitely conveys a more relaxed design compared with the Ref. 5520P-001’s matt-black dial.

For Military Precision

Any collector with a fondness for military-related timepieces or watchmaking history will certainly enjoy the 24-hour display.  The origins of this design go back to the sundial, but this was popularised with the use of military time and during WWI, when operations had to be coordinated among teams. The Ref. 5224R-001 was introduced to simplify the dial and do away with the need for day and night indicators in the dual time zone complication. The time-only, no-date watch is all about focusing on the present moment, with a large running seconds counter set just above the midnight hour at 6 o’clock.

With its utilitarian operation, what serves to remind us of the watch’s Calatrava roots is in its design elements. The stepped design of the lugs is echoed in the way the case middle, bezel, and case back are assembled, a design that is inspired by the Ref. 5212A Weekly Calendar. And the uncluttered offers plenty of space to indulge in textures and patterns. The snailing of the centre dial and running seconds, with circular brushing on the hour chapter ring, and train-style tracks for hours and minutes, stand out on the sunburst dial. And to keep daytime in the spotlight, it is noon that is at 12 o’clock, with the morning starting at the traditional 9 o’clock position.

The watch uses Patek Philippe’s Caliber 31-260 as a base, and the 31-260 PS FUS 24H is incredibly thin at just 3.7mm with a platinum micro-rotor. The sub-10mm thick watch is excellent for that next precisely executed road trip or work programme.

The Long Summer Break

Urban nomads, remote workers, or those going on a long 8-week summer break will want a watch that looks good casually or formally, but keeps you nicely aligned with the time back home. So, you will never accidentally miss that important work call or ring the family at 2am instead of 2pm.

For those who enjoy the outdoors or favour professional watches, the Ref. 5524G-010 Calatrava Pilot Travel Time released earlier this year is an ideal travel watch. The Calatrava Pilot’s design was a modern take on a pilot’s watch that Patek Philippe had produced nearly 100 years ago, known as the Siderometer. Meant for navigation, these had large dials with angle indications in the centre for the even-numbered hours. The new release comes in a white gold case with an ivory-coloured lacquered dial, paired with a khaki green composite strap with fabric pattern.

Alternatively, the elegantly styled Aquanauts Refs. 5164G-001 and 5269R-001, both in the favoured blue-grey dial and composite strap, make for a fetching coordinated look with the other half on the summer break in Saint Tropez. This particular shade plays on the neutral colour palettes that are used in everything from interior design to the fashion runway today. In the white gold Ref. 5164G-001, the Aquanaut Travel Time’s dial almost fades into the background, with the date window and hour indexes standing out. On the rose gold Ref. 5269R-001, the same dial pops out, with a striking contrast to the rose gold indexes and hands.

These are not the only Patek Philippe references that carry the Travel Time complication; to discover the rest, including the Annual Calendar Ref. 5236G-001, head to one of our boutiques or get in touch with one of our representatives.
