Animal motifs have been integral to Cartier’s design since 1914, when a panther appeared on a watch. The esteemed French jeweller and watchmaker has consistently treated the animal world with the respect and dignity it deserves, while simultaneously embracing the enigmatic allure and inherent desires associated with the most exquisite wild creatures. This aesthetic is further emphasized by a diverse range of Cartier Animal Jewelry Watches, which skillfully blend the artistry of jewelry-making, watchmaking, and gem-setting. A menagerie of beasts is showcased within these watches, including crocodiles, zebras, and tigers.

As Louis-François Cartier was the creator of numerous Cartier icons such as the Tank, Santos and Trinity, the watch enthusiasts might think that the Panthère de Cartier was also associated with the debonair Cartier family; however, that was not truly the case. While Louis-François Cartier did play a part introducing panther-inspired objects to Cartier’s design vernacular, it was the legendary Jeanne Toussaint, Cartier’s first female Artistic Director, who famously made panthers the unofficial symbol of the Maison, expressing through precious materials the animal’s fluid movements, intense gaze and sleek silhouette.

Toussaint elevates the Panthère, a well-known symbol of Cartier during the Art Deco era, by presenting the work in a figurative and sculptural form rather than an abstract or imaginative interpretation of the panther character. Her creative vision transformed Panthère to become an iconic piece for Cartier, still recognized today, and earned her widespread respect, bestowing upon her the moniker “La Panthère” – for her graceful yet fierce personality and unwavering determination, similar to the panther’s special power.

The Belgian-born French jeweller and fashion designer possessed an exceptional aptitude for style and consistently remained at the forefront of trends, anticipating the preferences of the social elite even before they became aware of them. Her fascination with panthers, which she had witnessed during a safari in the African wilderness, endured long after the trip had concluded.

In the early 1940s, Toussaint boldly guided the Cartier jewelry catalog away from the prevalent Art Deco style and towards sculptural, three-dimensional forms which took her panther designs to new heights. This was a big step from all the panther creations produced prior to that point. The initial pieces, a jewelry wristwatch from 1914 and an exquisite chatelaine watch from 1915, were both meticulously crafted with a panther-inspired pattern crafted from onyx and pavé diamonds. Notably, the first Cartier object to prominently feature the panther in its entirety was not a jewelry piece, but an invitation card designed by the renowned French illustrator George Barbier. This card depicted a dashing black panther alongside a woman elegantly dressed in a Poiret gown, adorned with ropes of pearls.

From that point, Cartier shifted towards more expressive panther designs. In 1917, Louis-François Cartier commissioned the workshop to create a diamond, onyx, and platinum cigarette case depicting a panther traversing among cypress trees. This gift, bestowed upon Toussaint, whom he affectionately referred to as his “Petite Panthère,” marked the inaugural figurative representation of a panther within the Cartier archives, paving the way for numerous such creations in the subsequent decades.

Recently, Cartier has rekindled its fascination with wildlife through a new creation featuring the beloved striped zebra, the cunning crocodile, the sinewy panther and the mysterious tiger — all comprising the new Animal Jewelry Watches collection. The meticulous craftsmanship involved in creating these watches spans every step of the process, from graphic design to hand-lacquering. The imaginary animals are encircled by a diamond-studded dial, showcasing the exceptional skill of the craftsmen at Cartier’s watchmaking workshop.

“These new creations add to Cartier’s range of animal timepieces. Figurative or abstract, realistic or fanciful, they convey the beauty of nature” explained Pierre Rainero, Director of Image, Style and Heritage at Cartier “For decades, this theme has been reinvented with each new creation, exploring its rich aesthetic, evocative power and symbolic force.”

The Animal Jewelry Watches collection’s signature design element for last year was the fusion of zebra and crocodile inspirations. The case, an oval-shaped voluptuous design, houses a lozenge-shaped dial. A lateral perspective of the case reveals the coiled design; which Cartier interprets as the creature poised to strike. The choice of material—rose gold, white gold, or yellow gold—determines the gemstones employed. Brilliant-cut diamonds are juxtaposed with black lacquer, complemented by green tsavorite garnets, rubies, or black spinels.

The Crocodile Jewelry Watches will feature three distinct models, each will incorporate the body and head of a crocodile into the case, encasing the round watch dial. Offered in three white gold versions, each set with a unique gemstone colorway, the Crocodile is a sculpted creature whose head and body encircle the case, commencing at 10:00 and concluding with the tail swooping onto the dial at 7:00. The space between 7:00 and 10:00 is entirely gem-set to harmonize with the gem-set dial.

This innovation introduces Crocodile Jewelry Watches into a range of diamond-set watches, featuring diamond dials, cases, and crocodiles. The second version incorporates a diamond crocodile against a diamond and sapphire case and dial, while the third version includes a diamond-set bracelet, crocodile, and a dial adorned with diamonds, sapphires, tourmalines, and emeralds. Notably, each crocodile sculpture is meticulously crafted and set with gemstones, including a distinctive green, emerald eye.

Concurrently, the Panther – the original inspiration for the creation, is showcased through the Animal Jewelry Watches collection. This collection features a sculpted panther’s body and head encircling the round case. The panther is adorned with diamonds and a black-enamel spot motif, while the case and dial are set with rhodolite garnets, spessartite garnets, onyx, and yellow and white diamonds. The strap is crafted from purple calfskin (with an additional brown calfskin strap option).

This is a unique variation of the Animal Jewelry Watches collection. It depicts wild animals such as panthers, crocodiles, tigers, and zebras through a sculpture-like creation. Notably, the head of each animal—panther, tiger, or crocodile—extends from the bracelet and reaches onto the watch case, almost as if it is clamping its teeth onto the exquisite timepiece. Each model is accompanied by a delicate bracelet adorned with gemstones.

Crafted in 18-karat gold, the panther is adorned with diamonds, while the crocodile is encrusted with diamonds and emeralds, capturing the essence of its surroundings. The tiger is set with spinels, spessartite, garnets, and yellow and orange sapphires, complemented by a black lacquer nose that accurately replicates the distinctive stripes of the elusive feline.

In an attempt to provide a more abstract interpretation of the animals, Cartier also introduces a series of Animal Jewelry watches that capture the essence of the animal’s coat through a meticulously crafted round case adorned with gemstones encircling a marquise-shaped dial. Each version features a case crafted with intricate layers and levels, creating a visually captivating effect, particularly when viewed from the side.
