Presence In Absence: Franck Muller’s 2025 Skeleton Watches - Cortina Watch Thailand

By stripping away the watch to its barest form, the artisans at Franck Muller shine the spotlight on exacting craftsmanship and evocative storytelling.

Less, it is often said, becomes more. A perfectly tailored suit elevated with just a discreet pocket square; a room distinguished by the faintest pops of colour; or economically written prose that conveys volumes. Time and again, restraint proves to be the truest form of beauty. And when taken to the extreme—as expressed with skeleton watches, where restraint actually gives way to reduction—the art of absence becomes even more breathtaking.

Skeleton watches first surfaced in 18th-century France, when André-Charles Caron reimagined decorative horology by attempting to reveal more of a watch with less. Caron did so by removing the dial and by stripping away excess metal from the movement, leaving only its bare architecture. Over time, artisans refined the craft by hollowing bridges and plates with greater sculptural finesse, and often adorning the remaining surfaces with engravings or filigree. These timepieces quickly became prized not only for their precision but also as expressions of ornamental artistry.

Ready To Bare

For Franck Muller, an independent watchmaking house that prides itself on testing the limits, skeleton watches are an irresistible invitation to dazzle and intrigue in equal measure. This year, the brand unveils two stunning novelties: the Vanguard Royal Bauxite, and the Vanguard Curvex Cut Flower. Although both collections uphold the time-honoured tenets of skeletonisation—anchored by architectural beauty and transparency of the mechanical movement—each tells its own unique story of art and innovation.

With the Vanguard Royal Bauxite, the technique is reinterpreted through metallurgy. Forged from a proprietary aluminium alloy in shades that span ice blue to vibrant green—and finished with an unusually durable anodisation, the watch’s case and bridges radiate with colour and intensity. Here, the traditional dial is reworked as bridges to serve as both structural framework and canvas for the mechanical drama within. This is minimalism, indeed, Franck Muller style.

While decorative, the skeletonised movement makes a statement of mechanical prowess. Exposed in full view, the in-house FM 1740-VS calibre with seven-day power reserve commands your attention. Each component is meticulously finished, anchored by an oversized balance wheel that oscillates at a steady cadence of 18,000 vibrations per hour for exacting precision.

If the Vanguard Royal Bauxite is bold and modern, the Vanguard Curvex Cut Flower represents Franck Muller’s lyrical expression. Framed by a bejewelled case in white or rose gold, the dial transformed into an artful bouquet, featuring beautifully hollowed bridges that double as stems and stalks, supporting blossoms of diamond petals.

Eschewing hard-edged geometry, the artisans hollow out the movement with fastidiousness and sensitivity, resulting in a captivating masterpiece that invites second glances. Depending on your preference, the flower petals are depicted with a choice of diamonds, emeralds, blue sapphires, rubies, or a combination of all the stones, sculpted with Franck Muller’s proprietary Curvex Cut, which features 73 facets to follow the contour of a petal.

Though the Vanguard Curvex Cut Flower brims with femininity, the watch is driven by a workhorse movement. Developed and manufactured entirely in-house, the hand-wound FM 1540-VS3 calibre is built for optimum precision and stamina, storing up to four days of power reserve.

Together, the Vanguard Royal Bauxite and Vanguard Curvex Cut Flower demonstrate Franck Muller’s artistic dexterity as the brand stretches the art of skeletonisation into different registers of expression. While the former is unabashedly modern and bold, the latter brims with poetry and evocation. And, even though the watches are resolutely contemporary creations, they stay true to the spirit of the art form, ranking as one of the most extreme tests of technical and decorative mastery.
