An Exquisite Enigma: Franck Muller Round Triple Mystery - Cortina Watch Malaysia

Franck Muller’s latest ladies’ complication watch is a stunning expression of mystique, romance, and spell-binding glamour

You sometimes wonder if the watchmakers at Franck Muller inhabit the same universe as we do, or if defying convention is so ingrained in their DNA that they cannot help but colour outside of the box, figuratively speaking, when it comes to crafting unconventional timepieces.

The riotously complex Crazy Hours collection, with its jumbled hour numerals and an hour hand that constantly snaps across the dial to point to the correct time, comes to mind. The cybernetic, mechanical-digital hours-and-minutes display of the Long Island Evolution Master Jumper is another example.

Now, with the new Round Triple Mystery, Franck Muller rolls out yet another intriguing expression of off-kilter and artful time-telling—shrouded, as the name implies, in an air of mystery, and commanding the space with unbridled extravagance.

The first thing one notices about the watch is its blinding brilliance. Housed in a 39mm white or rose gold case, the entire case and dial are paved in dazzling diamonds. Every single gemstone is meticulously set by hand by Franck Muller’s master artisans, whose gem-setting expertise ensures perfect alignment, seamless radiance, and a dramatic interplay of light across the surface.

The case and lugs alone are festooned with 120 brilliant-cut diamonds, totalling 3.90 carats. On the dial are 237 brilliant-cut diamonds, totalling 1.96 carats, all individually set by hand. Depending on the model—there are four variants to choose from—the dials come with triangle-cut diamond, emerald, ruby, or blue sapphire indices to indicate the time.

The next thing about the Round Triple Mystery that captivates watch lovers is the absence of traditional hour and minute hands. Instead, time is displayed by way of three rotating discs: one for the hours, another for the minutes, and a central disc with a lattice decoration spinning serenely in the middle of the dial for the seconds—each marked with a coloured gemstone index.

The result is a hypnotic ballet where time is expressed with a sense of ethereal beauty and fluidity. Even so, the Round Triple Mystery’s kinetic poetry is anchored by no-nonsense, mechanical sophistication. The use of independent rotating discs to replace conventional hour and minute hands demands exacting technical engineering so that the weight and motion of the discs do not affect timekeeping precision. To ensure that the disc for the seconds display rotates effortlessly, Franck Muller’s engineers opted to construct the component in aluminium—skeletonised for both beauty and lightness.

Legend has it that the Round Triple Mystery story began way back in the 1990s. While on a business trip, the brand’s eponymous founder experienced an epiphany. Struck by how different cultures perceive the passage of time, Franck Muller sought to capture a similar sense of “freedom and mystique” in a new watch.

This led to the creation of the Mystery watch, anchored by a rotating disc system to display the hour without the use of a hand. The concept subsequently evolved to include the Double Mystery—featuring two rotating discs for the hour and minute—and now, the Round Triple Mystery, which includes a third disc for the seconds.

Captivating with a mix of bejewelled ostentation and technical smarts, the latest addition to the collection certainly deserves its nomination as a finalist for the Ladies’ Complication Prize at the 2025 Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG), the prestigious annual watchmaking award ceremony that is the horological equivalent of the Oscars. But beyond the accolades, perhaps the most fitting praise for the Round Triple Mystery lies in its paradoxical allure: a watch that reveals time by concealing it, confounding and delighting in equal measure—each time you look to it to mark a moment.
