6 Rules of Success That Kept These Watchmakers Independent - Cortina Watch Malaysia

The last five years have seen an explosion in the number of new watch brands calling themselves independent watchmakers. Today, the term is a point of pride, especially among the early independent watchmakers of the late ’90s, and the well-established watch brands that kept their independent spirit. These six independent brands succeeded in establishing themselves uniquely within the high watchmaking space, applying principles that Singapore also used to go from independence in 1965 to a wealthy city-state in just 60 years.

BOVET: Investing in Human Expertise

BOVET’s Fleurier Virtuoso XI takes the art of skeletonising movements, which is a BOVET tradition from the 19th century, to extremes. It’s possible today thanks to the watchmaker’s investment in human expertise. (Credit: BOVET)

When the current owner and CEO of BOVET, Pascal Raffy, acquired the brand in 2001, BOVET had run through many acquisitions in 40 years. Its name carried prestige but there were few existing products that showcased its historical significance in watchmaking. Raffy understood that BOVET had knowledge buried in its archives, but lacked the people with the skills to unlock that expertise. Therefore, he proceeded to build up the strength of the brand’s human resources by acquiring a high-end movement maker and a precious dial producing manufacture.

Giving the staff access to BOVET’s archival knowledge and the resources to find new ways of achieving old techniques, or improve existing ones, has been instrumental to BOVET’s success. Not only have they revived endangered or lost crafts such as Fleurisanne engraving or miniature painting on mother-of-pearl, they have also taken certain crafts such as skeletonisation, to a level beyond existing standards. The Fleurier Virtuoso XI is what BOVET considers its first skeletonised movement, based on its own definition of the art.

Franck Muller: Learning from the Best

When Vartan Sirmakes, co-founder and CEO of Franck Muller, began the project of scaling up Franck Muller’s production, one goal he had was to ensure that the watch brand would be self-sufficient as a manufacture. He did so by first examining the practices of the industry’s best, but also looking at other industries that were similar in process and product cycles, to weight the pros and cons of particular operations. This method has enabled Franck Muller to maintain a very agile profile with its distributors in each region. From developing exclusive editions in a fraction of the time most other brands take, to scaling up new innovations, the adaptive production of Watchland also minimises waste for any reference.

An example is the Vanguard Skeleton Royal Bauxite series of watches, launched at the WPHH event in April. The ultra-light watch case and movement bridges are made from a special aluminium alloy that develops a thick oxide layer which is highly stable and is further sealed to increase its wear resistance. The result is a lightweight watch with a vivid colouring, that does not fade over time. The watchmaker well known for its Colour Dreams and Crazy Colour series has introduced an entire spectrum of Vanguard Skeleton Royal Bauxite references, each evenly monochromatic with a fully exposed FM 1740-VS movement that will run for a whole week.

Parmigiani Fleurier: A Consistent, Stable Brand

Audiences today may appear to look continuously for novelty, but they also desire authenticity and reliability, and the reassurance of a strong foundation. Anchored in the support of the Sandoz Foundation, the brand founded by watch restorer and legend Michel Parmigiani has kept to its vision from day 1: to create the best timepieces that hold true to watchmaking roots, while being presented in a contemporary style. From its precious metal cases to gold bridges, each Parmigiani Fleurier timepiece is created fully in-house, from the hairsprings to screws. High watchmaking complications such as split-second chronographs and minute repeaters are coupled with the finest artistic crafts, from guilloché to enamelling.

There are few watchmakers today capable of producing a watch to such specific and classic standards, and to reproduce it over and over without fail. Parmigiani Fleurier’s consistent approach to quality and expertise has earned it strong recognition from the industry and among collectors. Watches such as the Arabic or Xiali perpetual calendars, or the unique objects that celebrate the craft of horology, keep them returning over and over for more.

Chopard: Something for Every Audience

In the (nearly) 30 years since Chopard established its Fleurier manufacture and introduced its first in-house movement, the brand has embarked on creating a watchmaking universe with something for every audience. There’s the Happy Sport series that’s whimsical and groundbreaking (the first steel wristwatches with diamonds) or the sporty Mille Miglia for the automobile enthusiast. For the neoclassicist who will surely enjoy the elegance of a L.U.C model, or the creative expressionist who will find the rare handcraft timepieces and special editions appealing, Chopard has introduced timepieces that speak a broad design language and style. But each of them is rooted in the brand’s founding principles of reliability, precision, and handcrafted elegance.

Chopard also takes a very transparent approach to its cherished causes and values, which it states in a way that invites interest, rather than provoke opposing opinions. It also takes a long-term approach to its work, developing partnerships with Cannes Film Festival and the Mille Miglia race for decades consistently. Its loyal and enduring stance towards what it is passionate about, and offering clarity on its values, are what has made it admired among collectors.

H. Moser & Cie.: Keeping a Spotlight on its Highlights

Since the Meylans took over H. Moser & Cie. and Hautlence, they have applied guerilla-style tactics in creating headline-making timepieces that are designed for sensational impact. From bold colours to creative materials, unexpected collaborations and culturally relevant themes, the brand is in continuous change, going from one style era to the next effortlessly. This means that if you looked at Moser a decade ago and now, and if you repeated it a decade later, there would be three different versions of H. Moser & Cie. It’s a very dynamic and creative approach to watchmaking, that requires its team to be constantly tuned in to the conversations of the moment.

The more exciting part of this continuous gentrification is that it introduces new innovations very quickly, and in a variety of expressions. One example is the textured and enamelled dial that H. Moser & Cie. developed just a few years ago. When enamellers tend to work on dials, they usually emphasise a very even coating of enamel because of how it will melt to become hardened vitreous enamel. Even applications prevent uneven expansion and cracking of the enamel. However, Moser found a way to work with enamel on a textured engraved motif, that also combines its iconic dial aesthetic – the fumé effect with vivid enamel colours, and on a textured white gold dial. Since its first discovery, the colours of this dial have ranged from lime green to midnight blue. It’s definitely worth paying attention to.

Breitling: Global Outreach

You can never have too many friends, especially when each of them is an icon with the power and influence to draw in their fans. With Breitling’s ambassadors, each is an outreach to a specific region or demographic, intended to engage and connect with new and diverse audiences through them. Whether it is a sports personality, a hobby and passion, or a professional lifestyle, the Breitling Squad also balances the different products and purchase values across the brand’s catalog.

Of course, Breitling’s clientele tends to skew towards the outdoorsy, sporty, and aviation-loving. It makes sense that they would be keen in leading personalities in such arenas, from champion surfer Kelly Slater to top soccer player Erling Haaland. The Breitling squad also spans young and old, from iconoclasts such as Bertrand Piccard, to leading man Austin Butler. Everywhere you go, there’s a Breitling ambassador to engage and connect, to develop a personal relationship with. It’s diplomacy with watchmaking.

It may sound unusual, but these six principles are part of what made Singapore’s nation-building successful over the last 60 years. To find out how Cortina Watch is celebrating SG60, and to discover more about each of these independent watchmakers, head to one of our boutiques to try them on.
