These Watchmakers Are Embracing Sustainability and Purpose in Luxury

These Watchmakers Are Embracing Sustainability and Purpose in Luxury - Cortina Watch Singapore

The concept of business sustainability does not stem from climate consciousness or the green movement. It is simply a logical idea that for a company to have longevity, it must maintain its resources and supply chains, and develop a long-term view of success. This idea is inherently embedded within the finest luxury brands in the world. Luxury materials are finite commodities that become rarer every day, leading jewellers and watchmakers to elevate new materials to replace less accessible options. From a wider viewpoint, the extraction of these materials requires excessive resources that burden the communities they originate in and impact the planet’s health.

Chopard – Sustainable Supply Chains

The Chopard Alpine Eagle Flying Tourbillon in 41mm Lucent Steel case and bracelet houses the ultra-thin L.U.C 96.24-L calibre and is doubly certified with the Geneva Seal and COSC.

With younger consumers appreciating the values of upcycling and pre-owned luxury, watchmakers have steadily moved towards incorporating responsible luxury principles. The most prominent advocate among them is Chopard. It was first certified by the Responsible Jewellery Council in 2012 and introduced its first ethical gold product, the Palme d’Or in 2014. By 2018, Ethical Gold – which is new gold sourced from certified artisanal mines that apply responsible mining practices and Chain of Custody gold from RJC-certified refineries – was used across all its jewellery and watches. Beyond that, it has also powered its manufactures using renewable sources and developed closed-loop systems to minimise wastewater usage.

More recently, Chopard has incorporated recycled material in its stainless steel watches with Lucent Steel. The patented steel material is anti-allergenic and has greater lustre and hardness than conventional steel. It also reduces the watchmaker’s carbon emissions significantly, since steel is the most commonly-used case material across the entire industry. Lucent Steel was first introduced in the Alpine Eagle collection in 2019, and is now used across the brand.

The luxury sports watch collection is a modern take on Chopard’s historic St. Moritz series, and a family collaboration across three generations. Named for the Alpine Eagle Foundation that it supports, the dial of the Alpine Eagle features a radial textured pattern with a sunburst motif that is inspired by the iris of its namesake animal. Chopard has expanded the casually elegant and sporty reference with gemset and high jewellery models, as well as high watchmaking complications such as the Alpine Eagle Flying Tourbillon.

The stunning watch is equipped with the L.U.C 96.24-L calibre, its first self-winding flying tourbillon movement with an autonomy of 65 hours and doubly certified as a C.O.S.C chronometer and Poinçon de Genève. The 96.24-L is based on Chopard’s first in-house movement, which was introduced in 1996 with the support of the talented Michel Parmigiani. The Ref. 298616-3001 Alpine Eagle Flying Tourbillon is housed in Lucent Steel, which highlights the preciousness of the material to Chopard. At just 8mm thick, it is both sturdy and refined, with captivating details for the attentive collector.

The Chopard L’Heure du Diamant Round in 18-carat ethical white gold with brilliant-cut diamonds on the bezel and textured mother-of-pearl dial.

Of course, Chopard is also a jeweller and it would be remiss not to highlight their integration of the two aspects of its identity in the L’Heure du Diamant collection. Exclusively available at Chopard’s boutiques and Cortina Watch in Singapore, the jewellery watch collection features Ethical Gold watches with diamond-set details using a special prong-setting that exposes the precious stone to light from all angles and enhancing its fire. The bracelet is hand-engraved and each link is set by hand, in a style practiced in Pforzheim in the past. This particular model, Ref. 10A178-1314 also has a uniquely textured mother-of-pearl dial that resembles fluffy clouds, and houses Chopard’s smallest mechanical movement, the 10.01-C. The L’Heure du Diamant really celebrates jewellery art on the watch in a remarkable manner unique to Chopard.

Blancpain – Saving the Oceans

The Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Ref. 5000 was the first tool watch specially designed to withstand the challenges of the deep sea.

There are few collectors and watch enthusiasts who are unfamiliar with Blancpain’s ocean-venturing history. The inventor of the first modern diving watch has long been associated with the heroic professional divers and depth-plunging documentarians of the mid-20th century. The Fifty Fathoms was born out of a need to gauge time underwater and has pledged to protect our oceans time and time again. The President of Blancpain, Marc A. Hayek, is an avid diver and the gentleman who revived the Fifty Fathoms over 20 years ago. When Blancpain celebrated the collection’s 70th anniversary, he once again assured audiences of the brand’s Ocean Commitment (BOC).

The Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Blancpain Ocean Commitment (BOC) limited editions are released regularly to further lend support to scaling up effective ocean protection programmes across the globe. In recent years, Blancpain has focused its attention on Southeast Asia.

Within the realm of marine conservation aligned with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), there are just two watch companies that have supported 90 percent of global efforts. While Blancpain remains a relatively small watchmaker, its work in ocean protection is supersized thanks to partners such as PADI and renowned marine scientist Laurent Ballesta. One of its most recent projects is the Blancpain × Sulubaaï Marine Research Centre in the Philippines, an expansion of the Sulubaaï Sea Academy programme. The Sea Academy guides communities on the management of marine protected areas with Blancpain’s support since 2019. Through its Ocean Commitment Limited Editions, it raises additional funds for such programmes.

The new Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Tech BOC IV limited edition Ref. 5029A offers the same case design as the Fifty Fathoms 70th Anniversary Act 2 Tech Gombessa with a grade 23 titanium case and absolute black dial for optimal legibility.

The most recent Blancpain Ocean Commitment limited edition is the new Fifty Fathoms Tech BOC IV, which builds on the professionally designed Tech Gombessa released in 2023. The Act 2 of Blancpain’s tripartite release for the 70th anniversary of the Fifty Fathoms was targeted at closed-circult rebreather divers, with a 3-hour diving scale to match their equipment capabilities. With an industrial look inspired by vintage depth gauges, the 45mm case of the BOC IV is housed in hypoallergenic and corrosion-resistant grade 23 titanium, with a helium escape valve to prevent gas intrusion at depths of 300 metres.

The Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Tech BOC IV limited edition Ref. 5029A is powered by the watchmaker’s Calibre 1315A, with a five-day power reserve and silicon hairspring for anti-magnetism.

The watch is powered by Blancpain’s durable Calibre 1315A, which has a skeletonised white gold oscillating rotor designed like a ship’s anchor and stamped with the Ocean Commitment logo on it. The bridges of the movement are decorated with a sunray finish and designed to withstand high shocks, demonstrating its ruggedness. The dial has also been treated to reflect 97 percent of light to maximise visibility underwater. Limited to just 100 pieces, each sale contributes €1,000 to the new Marine Research Centre’s work.

TUDOR – Taking a People-centred Approach

The TUDOR Pelagos FXD GMT “Zulu Time” in grade 2 titanium with a woven fabric strap.

TUDOR’s sustainability efforts in the past were tied to its parent company’s programmes, which are diverse and focuses on empowering people who are fighting to protect our living planet’s perpetual beauty. In more recent years, it has established its own sustainability guidelines with guidance from various frameworks that cover every aspect of the company’s operations. This begins from its manufacturing in Le Locle, which is set up as an agile industrial model that minimises waste and maximises efficiency based on customer demands.

The TUDOR Manufacture in Le Locle was recently established and set up as an agile industrial production to ensure resources are used efficiently.

TUDOR’s dedicated sustainability department has quickly established core principles of traceability for its gold materials, measuring its carbon footprint, and creating a Science-Based Targets Initiative to reduce the group’s greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. This effort exists on a continuum, and also focuses on employee involvement and participation.

TUDOR’s Manufacture is fully supplied with renewable energy sources, both produced by its own solar panels as well as through renewable energy suppliers via the Swiss energy grid.

Focusing on how it can co-exist within its natural environment, the building has been carefully placed to minimise any impact to its surroundings. It is supplied with renewable energy sources and there are a range of different technologies used to provide comfort to employees while reducing energy usage. Of course, in the sourcing of materials, TUDOR has also turned to recycled precious materials as much as possible, recognising that mining new material leaves a lasting impact on nature and is resource intensive.

Quality and longevity are key to sustainability in luxury, and these are central values to TUDOR as a brand.

Not only does TUDOR contribute to the group’s ocean protection initiatives, it also has helped to restore biodiversity in the Jura region, and brought back the Bied river (which was canalized) to the land that it sits on. This has allowed native creatures to return to the space. But core to all sustainable luxury efforts is the longevity of its products. To that end, the brand has committed to providing repair and restoration services for all of its products dating from its founding in 1926. It has also invested resources in developing in-house movements with METAS certification and modern materials that ensure its watches thrive in the most challenging environments. By applying circular loops in production, it keeps its environmental impact low, and its products long-lived.

Cartier – Society and Community

Cartier’s Culture and Philanthropy division has its origins in the Cartier Foundation for Contemporary Art, before establishing the Cartier Philanthropy foundation in Geneva.

Cartier – Society and Community

We often hear about Cartier’s initiatives in art and design or its Women’s Initiatives. The latter focuses on strengthening institutional and societal support for women to end entrenched poverty, or to scale up the success and impact of female leaders. There’s even a research arm to increase the representation of women in research and reduce data bias across gender and minority groups. Equally impactful, but mostly working behind the scenes is its Philanthropy foundation, led by former CEO of Cartier, Cyrille Vigneron. One example is Cartier for Nature, which helps non-profits protect and restore forestry and biologically diverse ecosystems across the globe. These including protecting endangered species such as snow leopards to promoting sustainable herding or retraining poachers to become sustainable farmers.

One of the founding members of the Responsible Jewellery Council in 2005, Cartier has also established the Watch and Jewellery Initiative 2030 to lead the entire industry towards sustainable business practices.

Cartier’s actions in driving corporate responsibility in the jewellery and watchmaking industries are equally impactful to its Philanthropy arm. As a founding member of the Responsible Jewellery Council in 2005, it developed strong guidelines for the entire value chain designed to protect the planet and people working in these industries. It is also currently leading the Watch & Jewellery Initiative 2030, which commits its members to deliver measurable impact in climate resilience, resource preservation, and ensure representation for all stakeholders.

The Cartier Ronde Louis Cartier Zèbre and Girafe Watch, created by the Maison Métiers d’Art in 2022, combines marquetry, lacquering, and micro-granulation with yellow and rose gold gradation.

The brand’s dedication to the preservation of artistic culture and heritage goes further than most. Cartier has frequently invested huge resources into the study of lost or rare handcrafts. One example is gold micro-granulation, a lost art which it has re-discovered and modified with modern techniques. These crafts are used in its Métiers d’Art timepieces, such as the Ronde Louis Cartier Zèbre and Girafe watch, which applies micro-marquetry with black lacquering and micro-granulation with yellow and rose gold to create silhouettes of the two animals on the dial and bezel. For Cartier, culture and philanthropy go hand in hand.

NORQAIN – The Wilderness Beckons

These Watchmakers Are Embracing Sustainability and Purpose in Luxury - Cortina Watch Singapore

The NORQAIN Independence Wild One Skeleton combines high-tech materials and a unique shock-absorbing case design with fine watchmaking.

NORQAIN is a young, family-owned independent watchmaker with a sustainable long-term vision. Its pragmatic approach to production – in small batches and applying high-tech, low-waste solutions – is highly efficient and minimises wait times with maximum customisations. The Independence Wild One is one such model, with a configurator that can be accessed right on a smartphone. It features the brand’s shock-absorbing, multi-layered case construction with a proprietary carbon fibre called NORTEQ, which is remarkably light and robust.

It’s not just about materials; the brand has also worked hard to demonstrate its watchmaking legitimacy. NORQAIN’s first manufacture movement was introduced shortly after its official launch and includes a three-hand calibre, a dual time complication, and a chronograph to date. These are used across its different lines, which highlight the adventuring spirit of the brand and its pursuit of new heights. Developed with Kenissi, the base reference NN20/1 has a COSC certification and a power reserve of up to 70 hours.

These Watchmakers Are Embracing Sustainability and Purpose in Luxury - Cortina Watch Singapore

In a short period of time, NORQAIN has developed its own in-house manufactured movement, thanks to a collaborative effort with Kenissi.

Environmental responsibility and community support are central to NORQAIN’s social identity. They are also values that founders Ben Küffer, Ted Schneider, and Mark Streit, champion. To that end, they have selected several key partners to work with across the globe. From the Butterfly Help project that supports families of sherpas who lost their lives in the Himalayas, to tide ocean – a spin-off from strapmaking firm Braloba Group – straps for NORQAIN’s watches, they are building awareness of a different type of luxury, one that speaks to today’s youth in a powerful manner.

These five brands are not an exhaustive list of watchmakers dedicating resources towards environmental protection and care. But they are going beyond to integrate sustainable purposes into their products in an authentic way, which certainly resonates with collectors and retailers today.
