Montblanc 1858 Geosphere 0 Oxygen Mount Vinson Limited Edition

Montblanc introduces a new timepiece that pays tribute to legendary alpinist Reinhold Messner’s ascent of the highest peak in Antarctica.

The Montblanc 1858 Geosphere Collection has always found inspiration in nature and the world of mountaineering, especially the exploration of those undiscovered territories that fuel the imagination of intrepid adventurers. This year, Montblanc unveils the latest timepiece in the collection: the Montblanc 1858 Geosphere 0 Oxygen Mount Vinson Limited Edition, which pays homage to legendary mountaineer and Montblanc Brand Ambassador Reinhold Messner and his ascent of Mount Vinson in Antarctica, the final peak that completed his variation of the Seven Summits Challenge.

Now known as Messner’s List, the Seven Summits Challenge saw Messner climb the seven highest mountain peaks on each of the seven continents: this includes Mount Everest in Asia, Aconcagua in South America, Denali in North America, Kilimanjaro in Africa, Elbrus in Europe, Puncak Jaya in Australia, and Vinson in Antarctica. Since the idea of climbing seven peaks began in the 1950s, only around 500 people have achieved the feat and it remains one of coveted endeavours today.

Watches and Wonders 2025: Montblanc New Releases - Cortina Watch Singapore

The new Geosphere 0 Oxygen edition is limited to 986 pieces as a nod to 1986 – the year when Messner made his ascent of Mount Vinson. The timepiece comes in a 43.5mm titanium case that is directly inspired by the Mount Vinson landscape with a brand-new composite middle case crafted from quartz fibres, aluminized basalt fibres, CaCO3, and light blue resin. This composite mix creates a design reminiscent of the colours and patterns of age-old glacial ice found in Antarctica with its interlocking networks of crystals that have been frozen in time for millennia. The older glaciers become, the less oxygen they contain and the denser they become, resulting in this deeper blue colour.

Reinforcing the world of adventure and exploration, the middle case is adorned with a luminous outline of Mount Vinson that shines white by day and luminous blue by night. It is positioned on the left side of the case so only the wearer can see it.

Glacier Dial

This icy theme continues onto the dial with a blue-green and light grey sfumato glacier pattern that was created using a special technique called gratté-boisé as the base. The result gives the dial the impression of genuine depth and luminosity. This time-consuming process takes four times longer than a standard dial to complete and requires over 30 separate steps. The dial is further highlighted by a light grey anodized aluminium bezel with blue luminescent cardinal points.

Zero Oxygen Technology

The Montblanc 1858 Geosphere 0 Oxygen Mount Vinson Limited Edition joins Montblanc’s series of “Zero Oxygen” timepieces that feature several benefits. Explorer like Reinhold Messner, who climbed the seven summits without supplemental oxygen, need their equipment to work in challenging environments. Zero oxygen inside the case not only eliminates fogging, which can occur with drastic temperature changes at altitude, but also prevents oxidization. Without oxygen, all the components last longer and will provide continued precision over time. Each timepiece comes with a certificate as proof of this special, yet invisible, technology and guarantees the successful encasing without oxygen.

A Worldtime Complication

The timepiece is powered by the Caliber MB 29.25, featuring an automatic movement with Montblanc’s Manufacture Worldtime complication with approx. 42 hours of power reserve. Like with all 1858 Geosphere models, both the Northern and Southern hemispheres are represented by two three-dimensional globes that turn anti-clockwise and include a day and night indication so that the wearer can see what time it is across the Earth at a simple glance. A keen eye will also notice that Montblanc has included dots marking the seven peaks of Messner’s List on the Northern Hemisphere globe and the Mont Blanc summit. There is also a date at three o’clock and a dual time indication at nine o’clock.

Mount Vinson Caseback

To celebrate the full beauty of Mount Vinson, Montblanc has also added an engraving of this majestic peak on the caseback using a technique that provides an authentic 3D rendering that looks almost like a photograph. Made of titanium, the metal must first be structured, which means that the decoration will be engraved by laser, taking into consideration the relief of the drawing. Next, the desired finish (matte and shiny) is similarly achieved by laser. In the final colouring phase, the colours are created with laser-generated oxidation: the desired colour is determined by the level of oxidation. Montblanc is one of the most advanced Swiss Maisons to use this technology on such a large surface.

A New Strap

This new watch marks the first time a watch in the 1858 collection has been fitted with a new easily interchangeable rubber strap, with previous straps having been in calf leather. It is not only the rubber that is new: the blue-green strap features a mountaineer’s rope motif in keeping with the alpine theme. The strap design also includes a mountainous profiles pattern on the inside to improve breathability and comfort on the wrist. Like the other straps in the 1858 Geosphere 0 Oxygen line, it is tapered, easily interchangeable, and comes with a fine adjustment system.

Finally, this newly rubber strap includes elegant stitching above the lugs, a signature feature on watches in the 1858 collection.

Montblanc 1858 Geosphere Annual Calendar Limited Edition

Maison unveils two new Montblanc 1858 Annual Calendar Geosphere Limited Editions as well as a brand-new Minerva manufacture movement to accompany them.

The First Annual Calendar Geosphere In Minerva’s Movements Portfolio

Montblanc introduces two new Montblanc 1858 Annual Calendar Geosphere Limited Editions powered by a brand-new manually wound manufacture Minerva movement, featuring an annual calendar (hours, minutes, seconds, date, and month indications), a large date and a worldtimer function. The movement has a power reserve of approx. 65 hours and is composed of 336 parts, all of which are hand-decorated using traditional haute horlogerie techniques such as Côtes de Genève and a rarely seen snail finishing. Well-suited to complement this level of craftmanship, its workings can be admired through a sapphire crystal case back.

Annual Calendar Functions

For the annual calendar functions, the large date is positioned at 12 o’clock, just above the historic Montblanc logo, and features two large apertures positioned side-by-side. The date is easily adjustable thanks to a corrector located at 2 o’clock For the months, Montblanc has chosen to display them around the dial periphery via a red arrow showing the month in question, making them easily readable at a glance. The red arrow is a nod to the Roman goddess Minerva, the deity of craftsmanship, who was known for carrying a spear with an arrow at its tip. It also has a rich history rooted in early aviation Minerva chronographs from the 1920s and 1930s. A keen eye will notice that the month of July has been replaced by the word ‘Minerva’ as it was on July 30th 1887 that the Minerva trademark, and its recognisable arrow, were registered.

Hand-Painted Northern Hemisphere Globe

The visual focal point of these timepieces is their hand-painted, three-dimensional, rotating globe featuring the Northern Hemisphere and a Day & Night indication. The globe also indicates Greenwich Mean Time line with an orange line and a 24-hour scale. Crafted from sapphire crystal, each globe is hand-painted on the underside by a Swiss artisan, who spends four hours meticulously painting each one. The globes in these two new models represent the Northern Hemisphere, while the Southern Hemisphere is available on request.

Two New Limited Editions

The timepieces come in a 42mm case in a choice of Lime Gold 750/1000 (18 karats) (30 pieces) or stainless steel (100 pieces). Both editions are fitted with fixed fluted bezels historic timepieces and the first fluted bezels that date back to 1927. Today, the fluted bezel is a signature design feature of all Minerva timepieces. The Lime Gold model has a matching Lime Gold 750/1000 (18 karats) bezel, whereas the stainless steel version comes with a white gold 750/1000 (18 karats) bezel.

1950s Aesthetic

The timepieces are inspired by the aesthetics codes from Minerva heritage, notably the 1950s: the watches from this period in the manufacture’s history are particularly recognised for their elegant dial designs and precision watchmaking. Minerva’s in-house manufacturing capabilities and limited production quantities have further enhanced the exclusivity of these timepieces, making them highly sought-after by watch enthusiasts and collectors today.

These two new limited editions celebrate this period of Minerva heritage with their silver/white-coloured sunray and grained dials with blue-coated hands and indexes (for the stainless steel version) and yellow gold-coated hands and indexes (for the Lime Gold 750/1000 (18 karats) model), all while offering wristwatches that present a new take on some of the most well-known timepieces from Minerva’s past.

Montblanc Iced Sea Welcomes a New Look and 0 Oxygen Technology

Montblanc introduces its distressed steel finish into the Iced Sea Collection and removes all the oxygen from inside the case.

Following the success of the Montblanc Iced Sea Bronze-tone Edition launched in 2024, Montblanc introduces another new look into the collection with a rugged distressed steel case. This finish has a deliberately aged and weathered appearance that is achieved by treating the stainless steel case with a black coating. The process involves manually washing the steel before brushing it with quartzite, a hard granular rock from a stone quarry at the Mont-Blanc Massif. Thanks to this treatment, each timepiece develops its own patina and unique appearance. The distressed steel case is paired with a bezel featuring black ceramic inserts. The bezel has been treated with a two-step laser process at the first 15 minutes in order to lower it and give it a different texture. As a result, the white minutes at this part appear more highlighted in comparison to the rest of the bezel, where the minute inserts come in a light grey colour and lie flat with the bezel.

Glacier Dials

The Montblanc Iced Sea Automatic Date 41mm in distressed steel comes with a grey sfumato glacier pattern dial that replicates the colour and texture of ice. It is created using a special technique called gratté-boisé at the base, giving the dial the impression of genuine depth and luminosity. This time-consuming process takes four times longer than a standard dial to complete and requires over 30 separate steps. The result captures the texture of glacial ice with its interlocking network of crystals that have been frozen in time for millennia. The grey dial also features a sfumato effect which is created using an old Italian technique where the tones and colours gradually merge into each other, producing softened outlines and hazy forms.

Zero Oxygen Technology

New for this year, the Montblanc Iced Sea Automatic Date will now feature Montblanc’s 0 Oxygen technology that provides several benefits for explorers who need their timekeeping equipment to work in some of the harshest environments. Zero Oxygen inside the case not only eliminates fogging, which can occur with drastic temperature changes, but also prevents oxidization. Without oxygen, all the components last longer and will provide continued precision over time. Each timepiece comes with a certificate as proof of this special, yet invisible, technology and guarantees the successful sealing without oxygen.

Existing Montblanc Iced Sea Owners

Montblanc’s 0 Oxygen technology will now be integrated into all new Montblanc Iced Sea models starting in April 2025. Owners of previous Montblanc Iced Sea editions will be able to arrange a 0 Oxygen upgrade either by sending their watch directly to a Richemont center, or by returning the watch to a Montblanc boutique, both of which will take care of the necessary follow-up via a Richemont platform.

Montblanc Expands Its Iced Sea Collection with a New Size

A smaller 38mm case size, new glacier pattern dial colours and 0 Oxygen technology come together in Montblanc’s latest Iced Sea Automatic Date models.

A New 38mm Diameter

The Montblanc Iced Sea Automatic Date collection, launched in 2022, caught the watch world’s attention with its sporty design and dials inspired by glacial ice from the Mer de Glace on the Mont-Blanc Massif. Enriching the collection, Montblanc unveils four new models in a smaller 38mm case. Previously available in a 41mm diameter, this reduced case size is suitable for both men and women looking for smaller diameters.

Glacier Dials

Inaugurating this new case size, Montblanc is unveiling two new glacier pattern dial colours in white and light blue. All of the Montblanc Iced Sea dials feature a glacier pattern that replicates the colour and texture of ice. The pattern is created using a special technique called gratté-boisé as the base, giving the dial the impression of genuine depth and luminosity. This time-consuming process takes four times longer than a standard dial to complete and requires over 30 separate steps. The result captures the texture of glacial ice with its interlocking network of crystals that have been frozen in time for millennia.

Surprising as it may seem, this is the first time a Montblanc Iced Sea model has been created in a pure white colour. The light blue version is also a new tone in the collection and comes adorned with a sfumato effect. This smoky aesthetic comes from an Italian technique where the tones and colours gradually merge into each other, producing softened outlines and hazy forms.

New features are also introduced on the technological side, with the Montblanc Iced Sea Automatic Date now featuring 0 Oxygen technology that provides several benefits for explorers who need their timekeeping equipment to work in some of the world’s harshest environments. Zero Oxygen inside the case not only eliminates fogging, which can occur with drastic temperature changes, but also prevents oxidization.
