An Homage to Parisian Horse Racing, The Watchmaker to the King, and the First Inking Chronograph.
The story of the Montblanc Star Legacy Nicolas Rieussec Chronograph Limited Edition 821 timepiece began on Saturday, 1st September 1821 when Nicolas Rieussec (1781-1866) first tested his timekeeping invention at the horse races on the Champ-de-Mars in Paris. His device recorded the precise times of all the horses as they crossed the finish line, literally “writing time”, which inspired the term “chronograph”. Rieussec was not only the sixth royal watchmaker to the King of France; he was also a businessman with an eye for opportunity. Horse races in Paris at this time were big business, and being able to scientifically record the winners would be a gamechanger for the sport.
Limited to 821 pieces.

Following the introduction in 2025 of an anthracite-coloured guilloché dial in Montblanc’s flagship Star Legacy line, three additional complications are now added to the Maison’s timeless collection. These include a 36mm Small Second model with diamonds around the sub-dial, and two 42mm models, the classic Moonphase and the Chronograph.
The exploding-star guilloché pattern featured on all three watches is based on the shape of Montblanc’s emblem from 1913, a graphic representation of the snow-covered peak of the Mont Blanc mountain as seen from a bird’s-eye view. This guilloché pattern moves out onto the dial in waves that cast light and shadow into subtle motion on the wrist.
The anthracite-coloured sfumato finish has become a signature of Montblanc’s Star Legacy line, and adorns the 36mm Small Second for the first time. The gradient sfumato finish is reminiscent of that found on many of Montblanc’s leather goods, acting as a nod to the Maison’s leather craftsmanship.
All three models feature fully polished stainless steel pebble-shaped cases, the art of which is best observed at the lugs, where “steps” reveal themselves along the curvature toward the strap. A highly polished bezel frames the elegant dials, while an onion crown nods to older pocket watches dating to the early 20th century.

Finding inspiration in the elements, Montblanc presents a reimagined take of its Iced Sea Automatic Date 0 Oxygen timepiece featuring a distressed steel finish. To achieve this, Montblanc has treated the stainless steel case and bracelet with a black coating, which is then distressed by washing and brushing with quartzite, a very hard mineral sourced from the Mont Blanc mountain itself. This process results in a blackened, distressed appearance that offers an organic aesthetic.
A signature of the Montblanc Iced Sea collection, the timepiece features a glacier pattern dial which has been created to mirror the colour and texture of ice. The pattern is crafted using a special technique called gratté-boisé as the base, giving the dial the impression of depth and luminosity. This time-consuming process takes four times longer than a standard dial to complete and requires over 30 separate steps. The result captures the texture of glacial ice with its interlocking network of crystals that have been frozen in time for millennia.
The distressed grey colourway achieved on the case and bracelet are continued onto the glacier-pattern dial with a grey sfumato finish. This treatment adds visual depth and heightened legibility to this adventure-oriented watch.
