1904, Louis Cartier granted the wish of the famous Brazilian aviator Alberto Santos Dumont: to be able to tell time while flying. The birth of one of the first ever wristwatches sealed the bonds of friendship between these two pioneers. The rounded angles of the dial, the seamless curve of the horns, and the exposed screws made for an iconic watch that would inspire countless reinterpretations.

FRANCK MULLER PRESENTS 2025 WPHH NOVELTIES: VANGUARD SFUMATO SLIM. It is in this fleeting transition, neither day nor night, that the Vanguard Sfumato Slim finds its inspiration. Born from the poetry of
twilight and the heritage of Italian coastal charm, this collection captures the beauty of stillness in motion.
Its defining feature is a dial adorned with a soft gradient, evoking the Renaissance art of sfumato, meaning ‘vanished’ or ‘softened’ in Italian. In this technique made famous by masters like Leonardo da Vinci, strategically placed darker tones create an almost ‘smudged’ atmosphere without harsh lines. Much like the vignette in classic film, where edges darken to draw the eye inward, the dial’s fading tones, also achieved through a painting technique playing with the application of different layers of lacquer, invite quiet focus and contemplation.
